ObituaryJun 9, 2011  OBITUARY: MONTGOMERY CENTER – Arthur Riley (Art) Soule, age 91, passed away Wednesday evening June 8, 2011 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford where he had been surrounded by family and friends. He was born May 17, 1920 in Sheldon the son of the late Andrew J. & Teresa (Riley) Soule. Art grew up in Sheldon, attended Sheldon Elementary School and was a 1938 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the South Pacific Theater with the 341st Ordinance Depot Company during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked at the Ruberoid Company / GAF / Vermont Asbestos Group Mine in Lowell for 31 years, most of that time in the Quality Control Lab. Art was a founding member of the Montgomery Fire Dept., long-time Fire Commissioner for the Town of Montgomery, Treasurer of Calvary Episcopal Church in East Berkshire, Senior Warden of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Enosburg Falls and a member of the American Legion Post # 42 of Enosburg Falls. Art enjoyed being around people, especially children, playing cards with his family and walking to the store and post office each day until his 88th birthday. He was a “Big Kid” to his last day, picking on people, always trying to get a laugh.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Soule, who resides at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford; 2 daughters and their husbands, Sue & Lee Tillotson of Bakersfield and Nancy & Bill Riggie of Pensacola, FL; his grandchildren, Leif & Amy Tillotson and their son Andrew of St. Albans, Courtney and Sara Tillotson and their sons Jarrett & Avery of Richford, Jeremy Tillotson of Berkshire and his daughter Ruby and her mother Emily Garceau of Montgomery Ctr., Lauren Hammond, her fiancé Ren Chase and her children, Isabelle & Jack of South Burlington; 2 sisters-in-law, Evelyn and her husband Joe Barron of Valley Springs, CA and Eleanor Delaire of Burlington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Art was predeceased by granddaughters, Andrea & Jessica Riggie; brothers, Andrew (his twin), Horace & Max Soule; and sisters, Laura Crane, Harriet Armstrong & Ruth Benoit. A memorial service will be held June 25, at 10:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 215 Pleasant St., Sheldon with Rev. Janet Brown officiating. Interment will follow in St. Isidore’s Cemetery in Montgomery Center. Visiting hours will be held June 24, from 7-9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
