ObituaryNov 24, 2008  OBITUARY: WALDEN - Elwin Wendell "Brownie" Brown Sr., 94, of Walden died peacefully, Thursday evening, Nov. 20, 2008 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 1, 1914 in Belvidere, the son of the late Wilbur and Julia (Greenwood) Brown. On June 5, 1937 he married Margaret Eva Green in Eastford, Conn. In his earlier years he was employed in the construction business as a heavy equipment operator on interstate highways, for Lane Construction in Meridith, Conn., Pulazzia Construction in New Hampshire, and A. J. Orlando Construction. He later worked for H. G. Wood Lumber Mill in Bath, N. H and Britton Lumber in Ely, Vt.
For nine years he owned and operated Brown's Sawmill in Walden. He retired in 1980. He was a member of the International Union of operating engineers. Elwin enjoyed his workshop, making wooden toys for gifts, fishing, snowmobiling, gardening, country music and attending Antique Gas Engine Shows. Other enjoyments include: traveling, especially trips to Alaska.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Margaret, of Walden; a daughter: Barbara Chambers of Chelsea; two sons: Elwin W. Brown Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Valparaiso, Ind., and Allen Brown and his wife, Darlene, of North Hyde Park; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one greatgreat grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother: Newton Brown; a sister: Katherine Brown and a son-in-law: Herbert Chambers.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm Street, in Hardwick.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Walden Methodist Church in Noyesville. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Vermont Cancer Center at the University of Vermont, Health Science Research Facility, 149 Beaumont Avenue, Burlington, VT 05405-0075.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dian R. Holcomb, of Northern Vermont Funeral Service, 60 Elm Street, Hardwick.
