He was born July 2, 1932, in Hartford, the son of Floyd and Adrienne (Minor) Coutermarsh.
He graduated from Springfield High School in 1951.
In the 1950s, Mr. Coutermarsh served in the U.S. Navy for four years aboard the U.S.S. Saufley.
On Oct. 29, 1960, he married Elizabeth "Betty" McDermott in North Walpole, N.H.
He was employed by Fellows Gear Shaper Co. directly from the high school Co-Op class in 1951. He worked there for 37 years, retiring as manager of cutter engineering. For the past four years, he was a shuttle driver with Springfield Auto-Mart, traveling throughout the Northeast.
Mr. Coutermarsh was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield, the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Hit-or-Miss Club.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his camp at Maidstone Lake and picking blueberries.
Survivors include his wife of Springfield; a son, Joseph Coutermarsh of Springfield; two daughters, Joan Cluster of Boxford, Mass., and Mary Ellen Kane of Merrimack, N.H; three grandchildren; four sisters, Elaine Hinckley of Williamstown, Barbara Parker and Shirley Coutermarsh, both of Springfield, and Roberta Sirosky of Newport, N.H; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Coutermarsh, in 1989.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Springfield.
