ObituaryMay 16, 2021  OBITUARY: Enfield, N.H. - Claire Barbara Packard was freed from her battle with dementia on May 15, 2021, at Valley Terrace in White River Junction, VT, where she resided for the past 27 months.

Claire was born in Lebanon, NH, on August 11, 1932, to Rena Coutermarsh (Heaney) and Walter "Mike" Coutermarsh. Claire grew up and later raised her family in Enfield. She graduated from the Enfield School and, until a few years ago, attended alumni events with her classmates, maintaining lifelong friendships with many.

Claire married Robert Marshall Packard on July 4, 1952. She worked as an administrative assistant to the librarian at Baker Library at Dartmouth College, retiring with over 35 years of service. She was fortunate during that time to meet her favorite poet Robert Frost and to work on the creation of some of his poetry anthologies with her boss Mr. Latham.

Claire enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, playing cards, board games, traveling with friends and family, and feeding the birds. She enjoyed hosting her Christmas Eve party, which was held at her home for 50 years. Her greatest enjoyment came from time spent with her only grandchild and center of her world, Haley, who, as a toddler, nicknamed Claire "Goonie."

Claire leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Robert Peterson of Enfield, her daughter Donna Packard of New Boston, her daughter Terri Tucker of Enfield, her granddaughter Haley Tucker and her partner Michael Burnham of Canaan, her sisters Marilyn Avery, Diane Charbono, and Martha George of Enfield, and many nieces and nephews. Claire was predeceased by her husband Bob, her mother and step-father Rena and John Heaney, her father Walter "Mike" Coutermarsh, her brothers Robert and Walter Coutermarsh, and her sisters Dolores "Dodo" Gaudette and Joan Coutermarsh.

Claire's family would like to thank Dr. Barbara Lazar for her tender care for their entire family, the staff at Valley Terrace, who became a second family, and Bayada for their concern and support. The family sends a special thank you to Aunt Marilyn, who called Claire at Valley Terrace almost every day to check on her, as she had for many years before.

A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield on Friday, May 28, at 1:00 P.M. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Claire's name to Bayada Hospice, P.O. Box 1590, Norwich, VT 05055.
