He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Cornwall, N.H., the son of Harold F. and Stella M. (Sears) Maheu, and attended school in Middlebury.
He married Irene Coutermarsh May 11, 1947, in White River Junction.
Mr. Maheu worked as an auto mechanic at Miller Auto before purchasing the Esso Station in White River Junction, which he later moved to Wilder and operated as Herb's Exxon. After retirement, he delivered parts for Maynard Auto in West Lebanon for over 20 years, retiring due to health problems when he was 85.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, where he was a fourth degree member of the Michaud Council of Knights of Columbus, Good Samaritan Camping Club, and a lifetime member of Hartford Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of Wilder; a son, Herbert Maheu Jr. of Whiteford, Md; two daughters, Jo-Ann Kilar of Center Barnstead, N.H., and Ann McGahey of Epsom, N.H; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter; a son, Richard Maheu, in 2006; and a brother, Robert Maheu, earlier this year.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at St. Anthony's Church with burial following in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
