ObituaryAug 1, 2011  OBITUARY: BARRE CITY - Gloria Z. Sawyer, 85, of Maple Grove Street, passed away Friday, July 29, 2011, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, surrounded by her family.
Born in Barre City on May 24, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Celia (Habbep) Ziter.
Gloria attended St. Monica Catholic School in Barre and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, Class of 1944. She continued her education at the Bishop-DeGoesbriand Hospital in Burlington, where she completed her nurses training. Gloria then was employed at the Barre City Hospital before going to the Palm Beach Air Force Base Hospital in Florida, where she met her husband to-be, Gary "Buz" Sawyer. They were married on Feb. 2, 1957, in the Palm Beach Air Force Chapel. After her marriage, Gloria worked at the Mount Holly Regional Hospital in New Jersey. The couple later moved to Barre where she worked at the Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre. Gloria did a lot of various volunteer work, including working at the free health clinic at the McFarland House and Red Cross blood drives in Barre. She was very involved in the Barre Ethnic Festival and the annual Lebanese Dinners. She also helped organized "The Blouza" reunion along with her sister, Marie Keaton. She was also very active in organizing her class reunions. Gloria loved to cook, especially Lebanese food, she always had an open door with a pot of coffee and food on the stove for family and friends. She loved to take care of people and was very fond of her family. She was a giver, not a taker. She had an unlimited supply of love and care for her family and friends also looked forward to her monthly luncheons with her Lebanese friends. Her memberships include, St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre and the American Legion, Post # 10 of Barre and the Lebanese Language Club.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years of marriage, Gary Sawyer of Barre; son, Stephen Sawyer and his wife, Maggi Shadroui, of Vergennes; brother, Thomas Ziter and his wife, Carole, of Essex; sister, Marie Ziter Keaton and her husband, Dr. William Keaton, of Berlin; a very special grandson, Jesse Sawyer of Vergennes; as well as many nieces and nephews throughout the United States that she was a second mother to.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by son, Gary Patrick Sawyer, in infancy; daughter, Mary Pat Sawyer; and brother, Dr. Fred Ziter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Family and friends may call at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m.
