ObituaryJul 27, 2003  OBITUARY: SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Richard Michael Gordon, 81, formerly of Rutland, died July 26, 2003, after a brief illness.

He was born Albert Richard Gordon Nov. 10, 1921, in New York City and grew up in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1940. His 20 - year military career included service in Germany and Japan, as well as Alabama and Wisconsin. In April 1942 he made the Bataan Death March and then spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Japan.

Soon after returning to the U.S. in 1945, he married Jean Pellechi.

After two decades in the Army, Mr. Gordon began a second career in law enforcement and substance abuse prevention. He moved to Vermont in 1978, when he began six and a half years as the executive director of the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council and director of the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford.

After his retirement in 1984, the Gordons moved to upstate New York, where Mr. Gordon was a police union lobbyist and wrote an account of his prison camp years, "Horyo." He was often featured in documentaries about the war in the Pacific, including a Japanese television network special in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Michael of Lake City, Fla; four daughters, Kathleen Agne of St Petersburg, Fla., Suzanne Gordon of Ballston Spa, Nanci Gordon of Rutland, Vt., and Judy Giannakopoulos of Glenville; six grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; and two younger brothers, Leroy and Robert.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1993 and a son, Richard.

Mr. Gordon will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
