ObituaryFeb 5, 2009  OBITUARY: SHELDON SPRINGS - Lawrence Alwood Tipper, 90, a resident of this area for 58 years, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at the Northwestern Medical Center with his loving family at his side. Born in Swanton on April 15, 1918, Lawrence was the son of the late John Edward Tipper II and Virginia (Real) Tipper. On Aug. 17, 1940, in St. Albans, Lawrence married the former Leona Mae Domina, who survives him.

His mother passed away when Lawrence was six months old and was raised by his father and grandmother, Delia, until he was four years old and then by his step-mother, Harriet.

Lawrence grew up in Sheldon, later moving to Milton. Lawrence started his truck-driving career with Green Mountain Packing Company, then with Marcel's Motor Express and retired in 1980 from Quinn Freight Lines following 25 years of service. He was a communicant of the Sheldon United Methodist Church and a member of Teamsters Union Local 597.

After retirement he was able to pursue his passion of auto mechanics and spent the majority of his time in his garage working on vehicles. He also enjoyed raising and selling pigs, gardening and Buick cars. Lawrence, "A Jack of all Trades," built his own home from the ground up. A perfectionist, who liked a job done right and all things in their rightful place, he was a compassionate man with a heart of gold and hands that were always ready to help. Lawrence always put his family first.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Leona Mae Domina Tipper, of Sheldon Springs; their two daughters, Phyllis Archambault and her husband, Richard, of Sheldon Springs, and Nancy Martin and her husband, Robert, also of Sheldon Springs; five grandchildren: Dawn Jacobs and her husband, Steve, Robert Martin and his wife, Barbara, Sharon Bombardier and her husband, Paul, Nathan Archambault, and Lacey Archambault and her fiancée, Andrew Luneau. Lawrence is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Daniel Jacobs and his wife, Stephanie, Aaron and Ryan Jacobs, Eric Martin and his partner, Laela Gagne, Brittany Martin and her partner, Chris Delisle, and Cody Bombardier; great-great-granddaughters, Arianna and Aleigha Martin; his sister, Margaret Bevins of Burlington; his two brothers, Martin Tipper and his wife, Dorothy, of Inverness, Fla., and Paul Tipper and his wife, Laura, of Fairfax; his step-sister, Odessa Cary of Milton; and many nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia; stepmother, Harriet (Preston) Tipper; and his brothers, Howard and John Tipper.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Sheldon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Marguerite C. Gage officiating. Interment will be later this spring in the family lot in the Sheldon Village Cemetery. Lawrence's family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
