He was born June 24, 1934, in Pittsfield, the son of Oliver and Ruby (Dimick) Severance.

In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, served two tours in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, received the National Defense Service, Korean Service, Vietnam Service, Air Force Commendation Medals, the Small Arms Expert Marksman Ribbon, Four Loop Good Conduct Medals and the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with two Bronze Clusters, and retired from the Air Force in 1973.

Prior to his retirement in 1996 from Rutland Public Schools Maintenance Department, Mr. Severance had been employed by Arthur's Auto, Larry Kelly Plumbing and R.E. Dezero and Sons Plumbing and Heating.

He was a member of Lee Lodge 30 F&AM of Castleton, Maple Valley Grange 318 of South Wallingford, where he had served as the bingo caller, Shrewsbury Snow Birds, Loyal Order of the Moose 1122, American Legion Post 87 in West Rutland and the VFW Post of Beekmantown, N.Y.

Mr. Severance enjoyed working in the woods, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and camping. He also enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne (Bersaw) Severance, whom he married Oct. 30, 1978; a daughter, Tina Ellis of Mendon; a son, Thomas Severance of Fair Haven; a sister, Florence Flike of East Wallingford; four grandchildren; a niece and nephew; and his former wife, Dorothy Severance of Rutland.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa Curry and Caroline Sousie, and a brother, Nathan Severance.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland. Fraternal services will follow at 7 p.m.

The graveside service will be at the convenience of the family in Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
