ObituarySep 23, 2012  OBITUARY: ESSEX JUNCTION - Richard James Shatney, 73, passed away at the Vermont Respite House Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Dick was born Sept. 11, 1939, on a farm in Putnamsville, in the town of Middlesex, the third son to William Sanders Shatney and Gladys Holden Shatney. He attended Montpelier schools, graduating in 1957, from Montpelier High School.

Dick married Rebecca Pope on July 8, 1967, in Bethany Congregational Church in Montpelier. They celebrated 45 years of marriage this year. He was a lifetime member of the Montpelier Elks Club.

He learned to read blueprints at an early age for his father and followed in his father's footsteps to become a plumber. He worked on numerous projects in the greater Burlington area and throughout Vermont. He later established his own business and was always willing to share his knowledge on how to fix everything from steam boilers to a leaky pipe.

He loved the outdoors, especially to hunt and fish. His favorite place was his camp in Marshfield, where friends built him a tree house from which he could hunt. Unfortunately, he was able to use it only once.

He loved to boil sap with his girls and friends. Sitting on his porch in Maine and watching the ocean also gave him great pleasure. However, there was always work to be done and he kept very busy. Dick worked hard all his life to provide for his family.

Richard is survived by his wife Rebecca of Essex Junction; daughters, Jennifer Shatney and husband Erin Mansur and their children Owen, Eli, and Isla of West Fairlee, Nina Putvain and husband Marcell and their children Grace, Sage, and Chase of Hyde Park; his brothers William and wife Patricia of Lacona, N.Y., Robert and wife Gail of Barre; his sister Joyce Holmes and husband Clinton of Richford; sister-in-law Beverly Oliver of Lynn, Mass., and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and younger brother John.

The family would like to convey special thanks to those who helped us, nephew Tom Shatney, James Strouse, Kurt Biederbeck, Dr. Pam Dawson, Mel Bradley, and the caring staff of the VNA and the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Dr. Essex Junction.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. in Berlin Corner Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Dick's memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Ln., Williston, VT 05495.
