ObituaryOct 14, 2010  OBITUARY: Scotia, N.Y.- Eleanor G. Corbett, 85, of Vley Road in Scotia, passed away on October 12, 2010, at Ellis Hospital, after a brief illness. Eleanor was surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Eleanor was born on March 6, 1925, in Proctor, Vt., to the late Frank E. Garrow and Rena Baccei Garrow. She was graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, Vt., and moved to Schenectady in 1943 and started working at General Electric Co. She retired from GE in 1994 with 51 years of service.

Eleanor was a member of the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Auxiliary for many years and served as a volunteer in the BHNRC Gift Shop for over 15 years. As a volunteer at BHNRC, Eleanor received many awards for her hours of volunteer service each year. She was honored as the volunteer with most hours in 2003 and 2005-2009. She was one of the five finalists for the Schenectady County Legislature 2010 Senior Citizen of the Year and Senior Citizen with Outstanding Contributions Award. In addition, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program honored Eleanor for several years for her volunteer service. Later this month, Eleanor will be one of the 2010 Honorees for the Annual Senior Lifetime Achievement Award from the Capital District Senior Issues Forum. Eleanor was committed and passionate about her volunteer activities at BHNRC and helped with many fundraisers in addition to the Gift Shop. She was proud to give her time freely to help the residents and staff at BHNRC; they were her extended family and brought her tremendous joy.

Eleanor also loved to travel with her family throughout the United States and especially loved to visit her family in Virginia, Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence D. Corbett, son John A. Verhagen, grandson John Ellsworth Jr., brothers Paul and Gene Garrow, sister Beverly Velett and sister-in-law Pearl Garrow.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Linda (Jack) Ellsworth of Virginia Beach, Va., Barbara (David) Murphy of Hong Kong and Chester Springs, Pa; and beloved grandchildren, Susan (Adam) Cox Hernandez and James (Jennifer) Ellsworth of Virginia Beach, Jodi (Eric) Peterson of Ballston Spa, Meghan (William) Bours V of Portland, Ore., and Erin Murphy of Marina del Ray, Calif; great-grandchildren, Montana and Ross Cox, and Ryan and Kendra Peterson. She is also survived by her sister, Irene (Wilmer) Fridinger of York, Pa; brothers, Edward (Elaine) Garrow of Proctor, Vt., Gerald (Mary Ellen) Garrow of Rutland, Vt., Ralph (Marie) Garrow of Pittsford, Vt., and Jimmy (Jackie) Garrow of Highland Haven, Texas. Eleanor is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. She leaves behind many special friends who have enriched her life and brought her much happiness.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010, from 4 p.m. -- 7 p.m. at The White Funeral Home, 264 North Ballston Ave., Scotia. On Saturday, services will begin at 9:30 a.m. at The White's Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church on Second Street in Scotia. Burial will be held in Park Cemetery on Sacandaga Road in Scotia.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, William Bours, James Ellsworth, Eric Peterson, and nephews, William Velett, Frances Garrow and Edward Garrow.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and staff in the ICU at Ellis Hospital for their professional and loving care.
