ObituaryMar 11, 2011  OBITUARY: Edward Eugene Blackburn, Jr, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Thursday, March 10, 2011, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Blackburn was the son of the late Reverend and Mrs. Ed Blackburn of Todd, North Carolina. Mr. Blackburn, affectionately known as "Gene" or "Choppy", lived most of his adult life in the Tidewater area.

He served two terms in the United States Navy and upon his discharge was employed by Civil Service. He eventually retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. He will best be remembered by family and friends as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as an avid fisherman and hunter.

Gene is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nonie, who lovingly cared for him during his long illness. He is also survived by his daughter, Cindy Bundy and her husband, Shel; his daughter, Donna Sparks and her husband, Richard; and his son, Sam Blackburn and his wife, Kim. He is survived by five grandchildren, Lisa Greer, Daniel Dorman, Brandon Blackburn, Clint Garrison, and Samuel Dorman and two great-grandchildren, Phoenix Greer and Lily Garrison. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Allyson Dorman. Other survivors include sisters, Lillian Campbell, Vivian Gentry, Brenda Rountree, and brother, Ben Blackburn.

A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel with the Rev. Ron Wirth officiating. Interment will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Tidewater Central Church of the Nazarene, 5514 Parliament Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
