ObituarySep 9, 2011  OBITUARY: SHELBURNE - Arthur H. Cheney, Jr., 85, passed away on Sept. 7, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Plainfield, N.J. on Feb. 9, 1926, the son of Arthur H., Sr. and Irene (Ovitt) Cheney. Art attended Randolph schools and graduated from Rutland High School. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. and M.Ed. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Kappa Sigma fraternity. Art pursued a Doctorate in Education at Syracuse University and Colorado College of Education. He taught at Randolph High School and was a Principal at Plainfield schools. He was Superintendent of Grand Isle Supervisory District, Orange-Windsor Supervisory District, and was the first Superintendent of the Chittenden South Supervisory District. Art was the Director of the Office of Student and Field Services in the UVM College of Education. He was a retired Professor Emeritus from UVM. Art was happiest when he was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred R. Cheney; his children, Karen and Stephen Chase, James and Sally Cheney, Stuart and Katy Cheney; his grandchildren, Sean and Jody Chase, Christopher Chase and Hillary Burrows, Thomas (and Danielle), Daniel, Nicholas, and Crystal Cheney; great-granddaughters, Mackenna and Kendall Chase; his sister, Patricia (Fran) Trepanier; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Cheney. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Beryl MacDonald; and brother, Donald Cheney. A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Shelburne Methodist Church, where he was a member. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelburne Methodist Church, P.O. Box 365, Shelburne, VT 05482, or the Make A Wish Foundation, 100 Dorset Street #14, So. Burlington, VT 05403. Arrangements are in the care of Stephen C. Gregory & Son Cremation Services, Shelburne.
