ObituarySep 8, 2011  OBITUARY: MONTPELIER - Robert E. Yates Sr., 91, a resident of Village at Skyline retirement community in Colorado Springs, Colo., died Aug. 23, 2011.

He was born July 4, 1920, in Waterville, the son of William R. and Mona Locke Yates.

He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1938.

He worked as a meat cutter until enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served in World War II, postwar Germany occupation, Korea and Vietnam. He attained the rank of chief warrant officer, earning decorations including the Purple Heart and the Green Beret. He retired from the Army in 1972. He later worked for several years at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs as a food buyer.

He enjoyed golf and traveling in his motor home.

Survivors include his wife, Hildegard (Epple), of Colorado Springs; two sons, Robert Jr., of Spring Branch, Texas, and Harold, of Tacoma, Wash; a brother, Kenneth, of Essex Junction; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, infant Richard "Dickey" and Michael, and a brother, William Yates Jr.

At his request, there will not be a memorial service. His remains will be interred with full military honors in Fort Logan National Cemetery at a later date.
