ObituaryApr 29, 2015  OBITUARY: PUTNEY Alan L. Washburn, known to many as "Papa", 62, of Hickory Ridge Road, died Saturday afternoon, April 25, 2015 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family and close friends, following a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Alan was born in Colchester, VT. on August 26, 1952, the son of Lawrence and Pauline (Mayo) Washburn. The family moved up and down the Connecticut River Valley, from Bradford, to Newbury, to Wells River to Beebe Plain to Derby, where he graduated from North Country Union High School in Newport, Class of 1970. He had been a resident of Putney for 45 years. In 1997, Alan struck out on his own and founded Southern Vermont Sprinkler Services, which he built into a well respected fire protection company, doing business in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He was tremendously proud of having established a company with an outstanding reputation, which was a testament to his relentless work ethic and hardworking staff, who are an extension of his family. Alan held active membership in multiple local, state and national fire protection associations. Alan was a true outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and kayaking at the family camp in Bloomfield, VT. He was also an avid surfer who had traveled to Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic to ride the waves, and could also be found on York Beach in January. Alan logged tens of thousands of miles on his Harley, traveling as far north as Canada, as far west as Ohio, and as far south as North Carolina. He was known for his assertive riding style and loud pipes among the many family and friends that he rode with over the years. Alan loved animals, had a sweet tooth, and was known for his green thumb. On January 5, 1974 in Putney, he was married to Gail Derrig who survived. Besides his faithful and devoted wife of 41 years, he leaves one daughter, Jessica Washburn-Gonzalez (and her husband Dino) of Connecticut; two sons, Nathan Washburn of Ohio and Dustin Washburn of Putney; two brothers, David Washburn of West Chesterfield, NH and Craig Washburn of Putney; and a sister, Darcy Washburn of Putney. He also leaves three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and several cousins.
