ObituaryJul 14, 2007  OBITUARY: DANBY — Georgia Jessie Nichols Carabeau, 95, of Danby died July 11, 2007, at the Equinox Terrace in Manchester.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1912, the second daughter of Burton and Nellie (Kelley) Nichols. After completing the two-year high school program in Danby, she finished her junior and senior years at Woodstock High School, graduating in 1929. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1933 with a B.S. in education.

She taught school at the Borough School in Danby and taught and was principal at the Currier Memorial School for a total of 43 years, retiring in 1978. Georgia married Vernon Carabeau, a dairy farmer, in 1936. Together they raised a family of five children.

Survivors include a son, Vernon "Bud" CarabeauJr., and his wife, Millie (Phillips), of Limestone, Maine; a daughter, Carolyn "Bunny" Hodge, and her husband, Philip of Hartford, N.Y; a son, Larry, and his wife, Cris (Hebard), of Tinmouth; a son, Garry, and his wife, Audrey (Shead) of Eastford, Conn; and a son, David, of Tinmouth.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jo-Ann Webber and her husband Kirk Webber, Monica "Missy" Latz, Robert Bigelow, Laura Burch, Kimberly Donaldson and her husband Paul, Fred Burch and his wife Suszyne, Dallas Carabeau, Ryan Carabeau, Troy Carabeau, Jesse Carabeau and Sarah Carabeau; step-grandchildren Rhonda Phillips and Chuck Delpha, Laurie Phillips, Theresa Proulx and her husband Terry, Julie Phillips and Brian LaRusch; also great-granddaughters Nellie Burch, Lindy Burch Durkee and Georgia Faie Donaldson; and eight step-great-grandchildren, Joseph Sumner, Adam Phillips, Emily Phillips, William Matteson, KateLynn Matteson, Matthew Matteson, Margaret Phillips and Henry Phillips; and one step-great-great-granddaughter, Catherine Phillips.


In addition, Georgia was a mother figure to hundreds of school children who came under her care. She provided love, affection and education to generations.

Georgia was predeceased by her husband, Vernon, and five sisters, Mary Bradford, Martha Roberts, Florence Carrara, Anna Mae Higgins and Fannie Brock; also by a daughter-in-law, Ursula Kempka Carabeau.

Georgia was a member of the Danby Congregational Church.

She was active in the Danby community and in many organizations, including Eastern Star, the Vermont Retired Teachers Association, Vermont Principals Association, Rutland County Retired Teachers Association, Danby Youth Council, a director for Mt. Laurel School, RSVP, member of the board for the Smokey House Project and a frequent blood donor for the American Red Cross. Georgia was a volunteer and docent at Hildene for many years.

Because of advancing Alzheimer's Disease, Georgia spent the last years of her life at the Equinox Terrace.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Danby Congregational Church. Burial will follow in the Danby-Scottsville Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
