ObituaryJul 25, 2011  OBITUARY: SWANTON - Mrs. Catherine May (Longe) Medor, 87, a lifelong resident of the Swanton community, passed away at her home Saturday morning, July 23, 2011.
Born in East Highgate on May 29, 1924, Catherine was the daughter of the late Perley and Dalena (Greenwood) Longe.
She attended Highgate and Sheldon schools and on Nov. 30, 1940, Catherine married Guilford Edward Medor who predeceased her on May 12, 1981, following 41 years of marriage. Due to her husband's military career, Catherine traveled often, raising her family in Swanton, White River Junction, Germany, Winooski and Maine.
In 1956 Catherine brought her 10 children to Germany to join her husband and they returned in 1959 with 11. She spent all of her adult life caring for her family and anyone in need. She was well-known throughout the area for her fantastic cooking abilities and giving away most of what she prepared to family and friends. She will especially be remembered in the Swanton area for the more than 20 years that she spent as the cook and housekeeper for the Fathers of Saint Edmund at Nativity Rectory. She was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a lifetime Altar Society member. She also belonged to the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton.
Catherine leaves her eight children and their spouses, Eleanor and Marvin Howard of Painesville, OH, Linda and Thomas Blanchard of Essex Center, Loris and Debbie Medor of Richmond, Mary Ann and John Coburn of Grand Isle, Constance and Floyd Kilburn of St. Albans, Carlotta Vance of Swanton, Perley Medor of Highgate, and Corinne and Stephen Benham of Georgia; 31 grandchildren; 58 greatgrandchildren; two greatgreat-granddaughters; a sister, Helen Renault of Boynton Beach, Fla; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition, Catherine leaves two daughters-in-law, Katherine Medor of Aurora, Colo., and Cindy Medor of Highgate; three sisters-in-law, Marcella Peden and Sue Medor of Burlington and Charlene Higgins of Casco, ME. Catherine also leaves a very close, daughter-like friend, neighbor and caregiver, Mary Sherman.
Besides her husband, Guilford, Catherine was predeceased by three sons, Franklin on Dec. 24, 1999, Paul on Sept. 1, 2009, and Ralph on Oct. 3, 2009; a daughter-in-law, Karen Medor on Jan. 10, 2010; and several siblings, including two brothers, Kenneth and Isadore Longe; and seven sisters, Angelina Blondeau, Calla Lahue, Geraldine Husband, Rita Ploof, Nelda Wood, Louise Jewett and Margaret Belrose.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Fr. Thomas D. Nadeau will be the celebrant and homilist.
The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Medor Family Lot in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.
