ObituaryNov 7, 2013  OBITUARY: CORNISH, NH - Roger E. "Tink" Hinkley, 89, a longtime resident of Cornish, passed away Wednesday, November 6 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor. He was born May 6, 1924 in Greenfield, MA the son of Harland A. and Maybelle (Danforth) Hinkley. "Tink" was raised most of his life in Weathersfield, VT on the family farm with his eight brothers and three sisters. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1942. He married Gertrude Potwin in Windsor on August 11, 1943.

Mr. Hinkley was a veteran of the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater with the Seabees during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for Railway Express and was a partner in the Ascutney Equipment business in Ascutney that was a Cockshutt Farm Dealer. He later operated the Amoco Gas Station in Ascutney from 1953 to 1962, and had worked for Amoco Oil in Claremont as an agent at their bulk plant. He later bought out Amoco's holdings in the area and started R.E. Hinkley Co. with his wife in 1967, which they owned and operated until his retirement in 1986. "Tink" was a member of the Scottish Rite, a 32nd degree Mason and Past Master of the Vermont Lodge #18 in Windsor. He was also a member of the Bektash Shrine, the Claremont Lions Club and the Claremont Senior Center. He was instrumental in forming and an active officer of the Amoco Associates of New England during his business years.

Mrs. Hinkley passed away on February 28, 1998. He was also predeceased by five brothers, Larry, Arthur, Robert, Richard "Gus", and Stanley "Red", and by one sister, Dorothy "Dot" Treat. Survivors include two sons, Steven Hinkley and his wife, Ellen of Claremont, NH and Scott Hinkley and his wife, Lissa of Claremont, NH, two daughters, Karen Ambrose and her husband, Jim of Claremont, NH and Susan Neil and her husband, Jim of Cornish, NH, two sisters, Barbara Greene of Ludlow, MA and Beverly Thomas of South Royalton, VT, two brothers, Evered "Giz" Hinkley of Weathersfield, VT and George "Joe" Hinkley of Springfield, VT, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. There will be a Masonic Service offered by the Vermont Lodge #18 at 6:00 PM. The memorial service will be held Sunday, November 10 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with the Rev. Connie Moser, officiating. Committal services with military honors will follow in the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney.
