ObituaryJan 24, 2009  OBITUARY: WALLINGFORD — Verne Arthur Hawkins, 83, of Wallingford, died unexpectedly Friday evening, January 23, 2009, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born on November 4, 1925, in East Wallingford, the son of Maurice R. and Vera A. (Jewell) Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII.

He married Sally Garrow on August 21, 1948.

Mr. Hawkins had been employed as a bus driver by the Vermont Transit Co. for over 37 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the St. Patrick Church and a former member of the American Legion.

Mr. Hawkins enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Hawkins of Wallingford; two sons, Thomas Hawkins and his wife Linda of Clarendon and Jeffrey Hawkins and his wife Sharon of White River Junction; two sisters, Ruth Bixby of East Wallingford and Annice Perry of Wells; a brother, Lester Hawkins of Clarendon; four grandchildren, a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Maurice Hawkins, Kenneth L. Hawkins and Edgar Hawkins.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Patrick Church, Wallingford. Burial will be at a later date in the St. Patrick Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.
