ObituaryMar 4, 2003  OBITUARY: DANIA, Fla. -- Alphonse Robert, 86, of Dania, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the Hospice By the Sea in Hollywood, Fla. Though ill for five years, he was able to remain at home until recently because of the loving care of his wife, Lucille.

He was born May 10, 1916 in L'Ange Gardien, Que., the son of Joseph and Melanie (Tetreault) Robert.

Alphonse married Lucille Blanche Mercure on June 24, 1941, in L'Ange Gardien. In 1954, Alphonse and his family moved to South Burlington, Vt. where Alphonse built, owned and operated the Lu-Al Motel on Shelburne Rd. The motel is now known as the Ho Hum Motel.

The family moved again in 1955 to St. Albans, Vt., where Alphonse built, owned and operated the Cadillac Motel. Later, Alphonse owned City Feed and Lumber in St. Albans from 1968 to 1975.

After his retirement in 1975, Alphonse enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, golf and entertaining friends and relatives. From 1975 until 1998, he and his wife wintered in Dania, Fla. and summered on Maquam Shore, St. Albans Town.

Alphonse's wife, Lucille, survives him. He is also survived by his daughters, Francine Thomas and her husband, Keith, of Essex Jct., Vt. and Ginette Warner and her husband, James, of St. Albans, Vt; and the following grandchildren, Michelle Thomas of Burlington, Vt., Peter Thomas of Essex Jct., Vt., Alan Warner and his wife, Pilar, of New Albany, Ohio, Christine Warner of Jersey City, N.J. and Robert Warner of St. Albans, Vt., currently a student at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. Sisters surviving Alphonse are Laurette Brouillette and Claire Benoit of L'Ange Gardien, Que. and Lilian Gingras of Notre Dame de Grace, Que. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Alphonse was a communicant at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord in Dania, Fla. A funeral service was held on Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495. A memorial service in St. Albans will be announced at a later date.
