ObituarySep 6, 2013  OBITUARY: Suffolk - Alma Askew Perry Byrum, 93, died at home Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Mrs. Byrum was born in Gates County, NC, the daughter of the late James Benjamin and Fleda Lee Askew Perry. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, William Earl Byrum, and their son, W.E. Byrum, Jr. and his wife, Rita. She was also predeceased by a brother, James Cullen Perry, and sisters Mabel Harland Perry Wiggins and Virginia Lee Perry Harrell.
Survivors include her daughter, Earleen B. Sylvia, and her husband, David, of Suffolk; a brother, Irving H. Perry and his wife, Martha Ann, of Sunbury, NC; sister-in-law, Ethel Harrell Perry of Edenton; brother-in-law, John Alden Byrum, and his wife, Virginia Mae, of Suffolk; sister-in-law, Jane Carroll Byrum of Roanoke; and Aunt Helen Askew Butler of Lakeland, FL; four grandsons, William Clayton Byrum of Carrsville, George Randall Byrum and his wife. Annie, of Williamsburg, Daniel Kirk Sylvia and his wife, Erin, of Suffolk, James Benjamin Sylvia, and his wife, Angie, of Portsmouth; and 6 great grandchildren, Hannah Kay Byrum, Ethan Perry Sylvia, Abby Nicole Sylvia, Ashley Elisabeth Sylvia, Parker Edward Sylvia and Oliver Benjamin Sylvia; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend from childhood, Elizabeth Carter Perry of Chesapeake.

Mrs. Byrum was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and an avid seamstress. She was an active member of Magnolia United Methodist Church for 68 years (1939-2007). During that time, she was a member of the Savage Bible Class, the United Methodist Women, Chancel Choir and Prime Time Singers. Also, she was a 1937 graduate of Hobbsville High School where she was on the girls basketball team and the debating team.

The family will receive friends at the home of David and Earleen Sylvia. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens with Retired Navy Chaplain Phil Holwager officiating. R.W. Baker & Co.
