ObituaryJan 21, 2008  OBITUARY: SUNBURY - Wilbur Brooks Carter Sr., 95, of the 400 block of Zion Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville. Mr. Carter was born in Gates County and was the son of the late John H. and Ludie W. Carter. A retired farmer, he had also in years past sold his goods at various farmer's markets throughout the area. A member of the first graduating class from Sunbury High School, he was a member of Damascus Christian Church, the Peanut Grower's Association, and was proclaimed a "Country Squire" by then North Carolina Gov. Kerr Scott. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Rountree Carter in April 2002 after more than 63 years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Carole C. Smith and husband Jack of Gates and Alice C. Moore and husband Edward of Sunbury; two sons, John Carter and wife Mary Linda of Sunbury and Dr. William B. "Bill" Carter Jr. and wife Melissa of Carrboro, N.C; six grandchildren, John L. Smith III and wife Nadia, Arlette Lambert and husband Matt, Joanna Oxendine and husband Aaron, Jeannette Hollowell and husband John Wayne, Erin Carter and Meredith Carter; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Howell, Linnea Hornung and Riley Hollowell. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Tracy Clayton and the Rev. Billy Presley. A private entombment will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the home of Alice and Edward Moore, 260 Gray Road, Sunbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Historical Society for the benefit of the Sunbury School Project or the Gates County Rescue Squad.
