Mr. Lassiter was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Milton and Elsie Jane Benton Lassiter.

A member of Damascus Christian Church, he had retired in June 1983 after 20 years as the maintenance supervisor of the Gates County Public Schools. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed serving as his friends' and neighbors' handyman. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with an engineering division in the European Theatre.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lottie L. Goodman and Bessie L. Russ; and his son-in-law, Bob Holland. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Nellie Taylor Lassiter; two daughters, Judy L. Holland of Suffolk and Barbara L. Jones and husband Danny of Sunbury; three granddaughters, Annette Modlin and husband Keith and Lisa Johnson and husband Terry, all of Sunbury and Sherry Eason of Suffolk; four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kinsey Modlin and Adam and Aaron Johnson.

A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Revs. Forrest Guthrie and Garrett Lewis. Burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery, Sunbury. Friends may join the family at the residence.
