ObituaryDec 3, 2007  OBITUARY: SHELDON / ST. ALBANS - James Wallace Cantell, fondly called Wally, age 68, died Thursday evening, Nov. 29, 2007, shortly after arrival at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center. Wally was born in St. Albans, July 24, 1939, son of Eleanor Hojaboom Cantell and the late Ernest M. Cantell.

Following graduation from Bellows Free Academy he entered the U.S. Navy serving on several U.S. Ships. His most memorable excursion was aboard the USS Lake Champlain and actively involved in the recovery of Astronaut Alan Shepard from the first manned space shuttle flight. Following his military career he returned to this area and was employed at Fonda Container Corp. for over 30 years. He was an avid collector of coins and had an extensive collection of working model trains.

Among his closest survivors are his mother, Eleanor Hojaboom Kretzenger of St. Albans; his wife, Patricia Lewis Cantell of Sheldon; children, Marc and Tammy Cantell of Swanton, Christine and Richard Cantell of Highgate Springs, Veronica Mercier of Farmington, N. H., Rebecca Hess of Keeseville, N. Y. William Mercier and his fiancé, Michal Pellerin of Highgate Springs; grandchildren, Nicole Catherine Bushy, Jonathan Bushey, Samantha Cantell, Ryan Cantell, William Messier Jr., Evan Messier, David Hess and Richard Parks III. He also leaves his beloved poodles, Bear and Kadora.

There will be no public calling hours or funeral at Wally's request.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478; or to the Boys & Girls Club of America, Northeast Service Center, 5 Hanover Square, Third Floor, New York, N.Y. 10004-2657.
