ObituaryJan 27, 2011  OBITUARY: ATHOL - Harry T. Smith, 87, of 62 Pinedale Rd., Athol, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 in the UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, Worcester.

He was born in Otter River, on July 19, 1923, the son of the late Frank and the late Honora (Conners) Smith.

Harry grew up in Otter River and was educated in Otter River. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army 82nd Airborne.

He worked as a butcher for the former M&M Supermarket and Polly and Bob's Market in Athol, he then worked for Heywood Wakefield in Gardner for several years and later at the J.F. McElwain Shoe Shop in Athol.

He was well known for his catering in the local area and was a bartender at Traverse Street for many years as well as several other local establishments.

He was an avid Red Sox fan, loved his dogs and especially loved sharing his food with friends and neighbors.

He was a member of the Athol American Legion, the Athol V.F.W., the Franco American Club and the Otter River Sportsmen Club.

He leaves four daughters, Jeanne Smith of Key West, Fla., Dianne Russell and her husband Jeff of Norfolk, Va., Karen Smith and her husband Clay Qualters of Orange, Debbie Manning and her husband Michael of Northborough; one son, Gregory T. Smith of Athol; one brother, Charlie Smith of New Haven, Conn; four grandchildren, Kevin Manning, Colleen Manning, Patrick Manning, Angela Deveneau; two great-grandchildren, Connor Manning, Chelsea Deveneau and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Norma (Nylander) Smith, by seven brothers, Frank Smith, Bert Smith, Donald Smith, Robert Smith, Roland Smith, Arthur Smith, George Smith and by two sisters, Margaret Long and Kay Fallon.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 4:15 p.m. in Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake Street, Athol.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, from 2:30 - 4 p.m. at the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St., Athol.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701 or to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.
