Mr. Byrum, a native of Gates County, was a past president of Farmer's Bank of Sunbury, now First Citizens Bank, and served on its local board of directors. He was a charter member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Estelle Hooks Byrum; a daughter, Betty B. Lilley of Alexandria, Va; a son, Dr. G.V. Byrum of Scotland Neck; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.
