ObituaryJun 6, 2002  OBITUARY: Edward Merrill Rountree, 86, of Hwy. 32 N., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Rountree was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Jack and Mary Byrum Rountree. A retired farmer, he was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and was a founding member and former president of the Gates County Men's Softball League. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Umphlett Rountree and three brothers, John Byrum Rountree, T.C. Rountree and Wiggins Rountree.
Surviving are a daughter, Paige Rountree Pierce of Ahoskie; two sons, Tim Rountree and his wife, Barbara, of Carrsville, Va., and Eddie Rountree and his wife, Sue, of Hobbsville; three grandchildren, Tammy Rountree, Jimmy Pierce and Randy Lockley; six step-grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Dept., Sunbury, NC 27979.
