ObituaryJun 6, 2002  OBITUARY: Greenfield - Edith Alice (Cummings) Turnbull, 78, formerly of 76 Green River Road, Greenfield, MA, and a resident of the Cozy Corner Nursing Home, 61 Old Amherst Road, Sunderland, MA, and whose death occurred on Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002, following a period of failing health. A native of Greenfield, MA, Edith was born here the daughter of Arthur Clyde Cummings and Alice (Barber) Cummings on June 11, 1923. She was educated in Greenfield Public Schools, and was a graduate of Greenfield High School, Class of 1941. She married her late husband, Robert D. Turnbull, on September 8, 1944, in Greenfield, MA, and they had celebrated nearly 56 years of marriage together prior to his death in August of 2000. Mrs. Turnbull was formerly employed during the war effort of WWII at the Greenfield Tap & Die Corporation from 1942 until 1944. She and her husband married and began a family; and in 1952 she joined her late husband in the operation of their family-held business, the former Turnbull's Restaurant in Greenfield, MA. She was a partner in the business with her husband, serving as the firm's bookkeeper until they sold the restaurant and retired in 1985. Mrs. Turnbull was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield all her adult life. She was a former member of the Junior Branch of Greenfield, and was active in volunteer work with them for many years. Survivors include her three daughters, Carol Lindsay of Wheaton, Illinois, Susan Turnbull of West Springfield, MA, Janet Turnbull of Greenfield, MA. Additionally, there are 3 granddaughters, Keesha Pfeiffer, Kenna Lindsay, and Lindsay Payette. Services in Celebration of the Life of the late Mrs. Turnbull will be observed on Friday, June 7, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. from the South Cemetery, Leyden, MA, with Rev. Federico Agnir, Pastor, First Congregational Church of Greenfield, to officiate. Visiting hours will be omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield, Court Square, Greenfield, MA 01301. The McCarthy Funeral Homes of Greenfield and Turners Falls, MA, have been entrusted with the arrangements.
