Census1861  Alexander Valentine appeared on the Scotland census of 1861. I cannot find Alexander Valentine in the 1861 Census; though his wife, and children, at the time, were living by themselves in Montrose.
He was probably as sea.1
Census*1871  Alexander Valentine appeared on the Scotland census of 1871. Alexander (age 43 years) was living in County Aberdeen. He was in the Merchant Marines. His rank was A.B. Seaman. Marriage status, however, is unmarried. He was born in Montrose. I believe the street referenced is not a street, but rather a ship named "Colonial Empire", as there are twenty-odd people who live at this address with seaman titles. I found a record of a ship by this name on http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/aberdeen.html. The Colonial Empire was built in 1861, and was used in the Australian trade. It was sold to Milne & Co, Aberdeen in 1874. It weighed 1,305 tons.2

Census1881  Alexander Valentine appeared on the Scotland census of 1881. Alexander (54 years, b. Montrose) was living at 29 West Grimsby, Montrose, Forfar, Scotland. The family consisted of his wife, Margaret (age 49, b. Montrose), daughter; Margaret A. (age 19, b. Montrose); son, William (age 16, b. Montrose); and daughter, Jane (age 8, b. Arbroath). Margaret A. was a Mill worker, William was a Sail Maker, and Jane was a scholar. All were born in Montrose, except Jane, who was born in Arbroath. Alexander's occupation is listed as Plumber's Lab.3
Occupation*1885 He was a seaman in the merchant service in 1885.4
Death*May 15, 1886 He died on May 15, 1886 at Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom.4
Researcher's Note*
Alexander Valentine died at 61 years of age of phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis) following 8 months of illness. The record of qualified informant was signature of Margaret Ann Crow (daughter). Alexander's parents are listed as Alexander Valentine (General Laborer, Weaver) and Margaret (Watson) Valentine, both deceased. I believe his mother's name to be in error, as Margaret Watson was the name of Margaret (Greig) Valentine's mother. His occupation is listed as Seaman, Merchant Service. He lived at 8 Shore Arbroath.4
