ObituaryMar 16, 1994  OBITUARY: TOWNSEND - Merrill C. "Chuck" Gyles Sr., 62, of 142 Lunenburg Road, an avid outdoorsman, died Monday in The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts - Memorial, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Joyce J. (Liebenow) Gyles; three sons, Merrill C. Gyles Jr. of New Ipswich, N.H., Bruce W. Gyles of Newport, N.H., and Garth L. Gyles of Townsend; four brothers, Roscoe Gyles of Utah, Daniel Gyles of Palermo, Maine, and Francis and Kenneth Gyles, both of Townsend; three sisters, Carrie Whitney and Margaret Tule, both of Townsend, and Maida Chaple of Shirley; and four grandchildren. He was born in Newport, Vt., son of Robert and Margaret (Whittier) Gyles, and had lived in Nashua, N.H., before moving to Townsend in 1968.

Mr. Gyles was a truck driver for more than 40 years for Arrow Trucking Co. in Lowell (formerly Wright Trucking Co.), and Blue Line Trucking Co. in Nashua, N.H., before retiring last year. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 49 where he had served as a steward. He attended First Baptist Church in West Townsend, and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Following cremation, burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St. A memorial service will be held during calling hours at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 600 Third Avenue, New York, N.Y., 10016.
