ObituaryFeb 10, 2013  OBITUARY: Kittelson, Janice Rae, 61, April 30, 1951 - Feb. 07, 2013 Janice passed away on Thursday, Feb. 07, 2013 at home with her family by her side. Jan was born and raised in Roseburg. She was the second of five children born to Jim and Char Loomis. She graduated as valedictorian from Roseburg High School in 1969. She was active in many sports, including softball and track, where she excelled, having competed in the state track meet many times. She went on to attend Umpqua Community College in Roseburg before transferring to Oregon State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. Jan continued to be an avid Beaver fan for the rest of her life, even when wins were hard to find, and was a fixture at Beaver football games and tailgates for many years. After graduating from OSU, Jan taught PE and coached track at Lebanon High School. She married her lifelong friend and fellow Roseburg native, Wayne Kittelson, in Roseburg on June 15, 1974. The couple moved to Berkley, Calif. where Wayne completed his Master's degree. They then relocated to Vienna, Va. in 1975 where she coached track at McLean High School in McLean, Va. Jan and Wayne welcomed their first child, Karen, on Aug. 7, 1978. The family returned to Oregon in 1980 and settled into a house in Tigard, where they have remained ever since. Jan and Wayne chose to live in Tigard because of the small town community feel and the quality school system. She dedicated much of her life to supporting and improving both. On July 5, 1981, the family welcomed their second child, Brian. Their third child, Matthew, was born a short time later on Dec. 26, 1983. The family became members of Calvin Presbyterian Church in 1982. Jan remained a committed member of the church community her entire life. Wayne and Jan started a transportation engineering firm in 1985 called Kittelson & Associates, Inc. Jan worked as the company bookkeeper for many years. Her values and contributions are still an integral part of the firm today. Jan's life was centered around her enormous love for her family and large extended family, which she loosely defined. She was committed to supporting all of her kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighborhood kids and many others in any and all activities in which they participated. Jan was a regular sight at Tigard High events, both athletic and otherwise, long after her own kids had graduated. The entire Tigard community benefited and will continue to benefit from Jan's vast contributions through various activities in which she participated. In particular, Jan's commitment to the mission of the Tigard-Tualatin School District was a focal point of her life. Jan was recognized as the Lay Educator of the Year by the Tigard-Tualatin Education Association. In addition, she was awarded the Tigard Chamber of Commerce Volunteerism From the Heart Award. Both of these designations speak to Jan's significant impact on her community. In 2008, Jan became a grandmother, a title she loved immensely. Affectionally called "Bama" by her oldest granddaughter, Molly, Jan's life was filled through her involvement in her grandkid's lives. Jan is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughter, Karen Hughart and her husband, Matt of Tigard; son, Brian Kittelson and his wife, Sabrina of Molalla; son, Matt Kittelson and his wife, Lauren of Bend; sister, Kathleen Loomis and her husband, Ralph of Portland; brother, Dave Loomis and his wife, Laura of Roseburg; brother, Tom Loomis and his wife, Cathy of Roseburg; brother, Jeff Loomis and his wife, Sara of Hailey, Idaho; sister-in-law, Krista Winchell and her husband, Gary of Bend; brother-in-law, Jan Kittelson and his wife, April of Darrington, Wash; grandchildren, Molly Hughart, Brendan Hughart, Samantha Kittelson; and a grandson due to be born in June. In addition, Jan has a host of additional family in the form of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Jim and Char Loomis and her father- and mother-in-law, Ken and Bernie Kittelson. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome your contributions to the "Jan Kittelson Education Trust," which is focused on enriching the lives of kids, a lifelong passion of Jan's.
