Henry Tolles; b. About 1630, "Withersfield, CT" or Wales (ambiguity); bur. probably CT; Sp: Sarah; m. 1668, Saybrook, CT; Divorced: 1676; Ch: Henry. Notes: This is the first Henry Tolles in America as far as records show; he first settled in Wethersfield, CT, and then in Saybrook, CT. Henry Tolles apparently came from Wales or England, United Kingdom according to "family legend," passed on to several lines of the family tree. Before 1668 he moved from Wethersfield to Saybrook, CT. He divorced his first wife, Sarah, in 1676. He apparently married a second time and had children; no records of his other children have been noted at the time of this writing. IGI, ostensibly shows a Daniel Tolles (or Tolls) born ABT 1605, associated with Withersfield, CT; this occurrence is questioned. Although entries appear for a Daniel Tolles in the early 1600s, it is not at all clear that this was the case. It may be a hypothesis forwarded by someone who studied these records. A marriage took place, according to the IGI, (to Mrs. Daniel Tolls or Tolles) in <1629>. This marriage date is appropriate for a birth of Henry Tolles in 1630: "Son of (possibly Daniel Tolles), born about 1630 (possibly inEngland, United Kingdom, possibly in Wales) married Sarah, resided at Saybrook, CT, and New Haven, Conn." The facts are not at all clear. "Henry Tolls" is mentioned in IGI as having Sp: "Sarah Tolls." Another reference: "Towle, Towel, Toale, Tole, Toll, Toule, or Towell, Henry, Wethersfield, rem to Saybrook soon aft. 1668, had w. Sarah, and one ch. prob. Henry, desert. his w. wh. in 1676 was divorc. for his desert. above six yrs. as in Trumbull's Col. Rec. II. 293, with liberty if shall 'have opportun. to join hers. in m. with ano. man.'" "The Colonial Records of Connecticut, Vol. 2, p. 293, in an account of the Session of the General Court at Hartford, on October 23rd, 1676, makes mention of the granting by that Court, of a marriage divorce, to a Sarah Towle, on the grounds of desertion by her husband (his name is not given). On account of the different spelling of the name, it would appear improbable that the Sarah Towle thus mentioned was the wife of Henry Tolles."
